MARSEILLE (Tuesday, May 9 afternnon, 35Euros/person) With its 26 centurys of history, Marseille is the first of the big french towns. You will find the Vieux Port (old port) with its forest of masts, the Saint Jean and Saint Nicolas fortresses at the ports entrance. The Pharo palace ex residence of the Imperatrice Eugenie, the famous Canebiere et the ferry boat made famous by Pagnol. The Vieille Charite built in 1640 to isolate paupers, and is now a multi-culturel place that houses a museum, The site of Notre Dame de la Garde, or more usually called La Bonne Mere, has an amazing vista. The golden statue of the virgin rising at 162 meters is the patron saint of fishermen. The cornice Kennedy, a long road on the seafront that gives wonderful views of the nearby islands ( the If castle where the count of Monte Cristo was imprisoned and Frioul island ). At the other end of town, the Goudes village is the opening place of the famous creeks. The «cabanons » or fishermans huts, built on the rock side which plunge into the sea.To finish the city tour, we will stop at the Longchamp Palace, the Saint Victoire Basilica et the Major cathedral. |
CASSIS AND THEIR CALANQUES, LE CASTELLET, (Wednesday, May 10, full day, 80Euros/person) Leaving Marseille by the Gineste road before arriving in Cassis, a small, pretty seaside resort found at the bottom of the Cap Canaille cliffs. You will be seduced by the quayside with its cafes and creeks which you will visit by boat ( weather permitting ), Some of the creeks are remarkable ; Port Miou, old rock quarry, Port Pin with its pretty shady beach, En Vau and its well known rock climbing cliffs. Lunch in the port. In the afternoon we will drive towards La Ciotat well known for its ship building yards, taking the upper « route des cretes » with its marvellous vews of the sea below, The road climbs up to Cap Canaille, the highest cliffs in France, ( 394 meters ). |
AIX EN PROVENCE (Thursday, May 11, morning, 35 Euros/person) The Provence Capital, Aix the thermal town, Aix the roman has kept its court of appeal, heritage of Parlement since 1501 that has kept its fortress with its sovereign counts. The culturel role is made by the International Festival and the inspirations for the thinkers and artists are made by the painter Paul Cezanne. At the bottom of the Entrement promontary with its vineyards that punctuate the rive Arc, Aix spreads largly towards the Berre etang with its industrialised shoreline, with the conviction that it is useful for all the modern production needs, but without spoiling the traditional surroundings that the inhabitants are so firmly attached. You will discover, apart from the many fountains ( more than a hundred ), the shady lanes and the famous Cours Mirabeau, the speciality « calissons » et the Puyricard chocolates. The visit is done by foot to better discover the private residences and charming houses, and be able to wander under the the plane trees.
